Exercise improves general health, keeps extra weight off, and increases strength and endurance. We can consider meditation a soul exercise. It compels us to focus on God’s purposes and promises rather than on self-indulgent diversions and pursuits.

The way we exercise our body shapes it, whether through running or weight training. Likewise, the soul will conform to how we exercise it. That’s why changing up our spiritual exercise routine can be beneficial. For example, one year we could read through the Bible, the next year we could focus on studying and memorizing a specific book, and in another year, we could take a few months to meditate on and pray through texts related to areas of special concern.

When a couple first falls in love, there are hormonal fireworks. However, in marriage, they need to actively work on finding joy in each other. Consistent, persistent, faithful, intentional, and affectionate pursuit of each other through all challenges fosters a profound capacity for delight that extends beyond the initial fireworks phase. Similarly, devotions are a way to cultivate joy in God. While some days may feel routine, the cumulative power of devotion can surprise us by deepening our love for and awareness of HIM.
